The embRACE Award Scholarship: One Year On
As Black History Month draws to a close, Race Forward CIC is proud to share an update on the impact of the embRACE Award Scholarship, launched in partnership with the University of Leicester in 2024. Now in its second year, the scholarship continues to support talented Black students in pursuing higher education and unlocking their potential.
Our first embRACE Award recipient, Leon, has successfully completed the first year of his BSc in Accounting and Finance and has now progressed into his second year at the University of Leicester. Reflecting on his journey so far, Leon shared:
“Year 1 had been challenging, but I learned a lot and am feeling positive about the new academic year. The embRACE Award has been a huge help in covering day-to-day expenses including food and travel, and has alleviated a lot of financial stress. As a care-leaver, the support has meant a great deal, and I would like to pass on my thanks to Race Forward CIC and everyone involved.”
The embRACE Award was created to tackle racial inequity in higher education, particularly by supporting students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. The financial and pastoral support provided through the Award has already demonstrated tangible benefits in improving students’ experiences and academic confidence.
Speaking on the impact of the programme, Daniel Adebayo, Founder and CEO of Race Forward CIC, said:
“Hearing Leon’s story as a care-leaver navigating university life and the impact the embRACE Award is having on his university experience is incredibly humbling. As Founder and CEO of Race Forward CIC, I am excited to continue supporting talented Black students like Leon, removing financial barriers to their success and creating opportunities for them to thrive. Leon’s testimony embodies why I set up Race Forward CIC back in 2024.”
Race Forward CIC remains committed to creating inclusive opportunities and ensuring that no talented student is held back by financial constraints. The organisation looks forward to continuing its partnership with the University of Leicester and expanding the embRACE Award to reach even more students in the years ahead.
